The rich continuum of C2C services for parents in one location combined with the trauma-informed culture of the center have a profound effect on a parent’s journey through the child welfare process. Family Time Coaching is so much more trauma-informed and ‘co-regulating’ for parent-child dyads than the ‘business as usual’ approach to visits.

Cradle to Crayons

Arizona

Cradle to Crayons in Arizona was modeled after the national ZERO TO THREE Safe Babies Court Teams initiative, an approach to community engagement and systems change focused on improving how courts, child welfare agencies, and community providers work with young children and their families. Cradle to Crayons (C2C) focuses on young children because 41% of Arizona children in out-of-home care are 5 years or under and young children are more likely to be victims of child abuse and neglect, stay in foster care longer than older children, and less likely to be reunified with their parents. In addition to active court teams and specialized judges. C2C operates through Child Welfare Centers that offer mental health services including child parent psychotherapy, trauma therapy and Family Time Coaching. C2C’s approach emphasizes valuing parents, supporting Shared Parenting by parents and foster parents, and understanding the unique needs of children in care, how they experience trauma and how to intervene. Research by the Arizona State University Center for Child Well-Being found that Family Time Coaching was significantly associated with reunification; trauma therapy in combination with Family Time Coaching or Family Time Coaching in combination with resource coordination had even higher correlations with reunification.
